Celebrity news, really a "news"?

October 31st 2006 00:09
with so much going around the world, from genocide in Sudan to war in Iraq and Palestin, i find it difficult to accept the fact that media labels the celebrity happenings as "news". is the right? is it a news?

no. it is not a news because celebrities are people who have pampred life, fat bank accounts and insulated lives. why should the whole world known when Paris Hliton is arrested for DUI, when the actual news in Palestin is not covered by the US media ( i am really peeved against CNN).. and why should i know that Britney Spears' good for nothing husband is a aspiring singer? is that a matter of national importance?

i am sick of the coverage celebrities get. you know this kind of fake journalism is overshadowing the real journalism, this cancer is eating up the honourable craft..

how many of you know that a student from Palestin was not allowed to study in an Israeli University for her PhD by the Israeli Government't security law? do you believe that this incident deserves a better coverage than the life drug addicted bozos like Bobby Brown and Whitney Huston?

yes yes yes

Some of the key elements that determine whether or not something is news or newsworthy are prominence and interest. Celebrities are in a position of prominence given their profile and people are interested in what goes on in their lives, some more than others of course, so unfortunately whether we like it or not it is news.

What makes news "fit to print" is whether or not people want to read such things first thing in the morning.

Heavy news such as the Palestine/Israel conflict is given less prominence than scandalous celebrity tripe because thats what most people in todays pop-culture obsessed world want to know.

A huge need for distraction from all the bad joo joo certainly feeds the 'need' for celebrity news.

I think the focus on celebrities instead of what's happening in the world is a form of escapism. It's good for a while but we all must get back to reality sometime.
