A Political Mind - January 2008

Agony Of Tax Payers !

January 31st 2008 12:19
This is the most difficult time for the hundreds and thousands of honest taxpayers.Sahrukh Khan, despite of paying a whopping 27 crores to the Income Tax departments can still afford smiling. But for many ordinary mortals it is nothing sort of rubbing salt to their wounds.A government servant drawing a meager salary, in a metro city like Mumbai, would be struggling for survival itself.
There are vast majority of people who are not able to invest anything due to the meagre salary they get and as a consequence have to pay the amount that is equivalent of a month of their salary. A teacher employed with a public school had to pay around 20000 which forced her to seek loan in order to pay monthly bills. This situation forces many to adopt corrupt practices because those who accept bribe are financially well off and never ever bother abut the superfluous Income Tax.

Employees of Central government are hopeful that the implementation of the pay commission would solve some of their woe. But they are sadly mistaken as this would entail greater tax burden. The only solution is to save somehow but it is easier said than done.
A lecturer of Delhi University drawing around a salary of 30000 can hardly save as he has to pay 6000 per month towards the fees of his children;7000 as rent; 3000 for his commuting expenses; 10000 for his household expense. He actually gets only 250000 per month at hand so he is barely able to meet his monthly expense. How can he save in that scenario?
He can not compromise with the education of his children; he is lucky to get that apartment for that kind of rent; he avoids personal transport and still has to spend more than he could afford. As for household expenses he spends bare minimum. His salary would be heavily deducted now sow how will he manage?

In spite of suffering financially these classes of people never complain about their sufferings. But on the other hand there are millions of people in Delhi who somehow avoid paying tax. Traders in particular, very vocal when caught violating the rules and brought to book, are the worst offenders. Very few of them voluntarily declare their real income. Any bungalow in any part of the city like Delhi would be worth more than a crore. And there would be at least 500000 such structure. But there is less than a 100,000 honest citizen who declare their income more than a million rupees per year. This is just laughable.
Government must constitute a separate body to ascertain those who steal taxes. A warning should be given to either confirm or be prepared to cough up from a retrospective date. This will bring so much revenue to the coffers that all the financial needs for Infrastructure can be met from this source only.
All the transaction in the wholesale market like Sadar Bazar, Delhi is carried out in such a way that neither party has any tax obligation. But in spite of being in the heart of Delhi, the pathetic condition prevailing there can beat a semi urban town hands down. This is the embodiment of real India and a true reflection of the anarchic governance.
How can the government force these people to be honest when it itself absolves Mayawati of all corruption charges. The certain Lalu P.Yadav is admired and even invited to be judge of “Lead India”, an initiative of Times of India. This shows that even the press is not concerned about the larger issues and tries to be cozy with the corrupt leaders.
Is there any hope at the end of the tunnel? Absolutely not because those who can be squeezed will be squeezed further and all the corrupt, immoral, unethical soul would be wandering, preaching about nation building, honesty and integrity.

Politics is not something that is discussed extensively at the thousands of “Chouk”,spread over all across India now. There has been gradual shift of intensity in recent years because the importance of local political activists have diminished. There are some states where only people of dubious characters are seen politicking. The student politics has been completely hijacked by the spoilt rich brats and their associate, mostly muscle men known for their criminal records.

The good thing however is that the local affairs are being given more attention now.Sensing the changed mood and preference,News Papers have been forced to change their marketing and Circulation strategy.Almost all the News Papers have started now multiple edition and they subcategories that too district wise.Television Broadcasters have woken up too and very soon there will be numerous Local Television Station .NDTV realized this too and has started “Metro Nation”as the first initiative in that direction.Sahara Group ,T.V.Today Group and Zee Group have already started local Television Stations.

There are more than 250 Local Television Station in the USA which are very popular for their interactive features.

The Zee Group in India tried to push this initiative through “Siti Channel” and the response was very encouraging. Many of its city specific channel became very popular initially even though the quality of content and broadcasting was not professional grade.Hinduja Promoted "In cable net" also introduced local programming in various cities. These Companies failed to capitalize their initial successes they met primarily because they succumbed to the advice of marketing junkies who pressed for the network expansion and up-gradation at the cost of content augmentation.Had they concentrated upon the content and quality broadcasting then they would need not start a fresh again now, which are they planning to do again.

Sahara Media and E Tv started numerous channels for specific states without much preparation and as a result have not been able to establish their foot hold.NDTV seems to have noticed the mistakes made and as a result it is more or less certain to succeed.

In the News Paper segment Dainik Jagran took the north India by storm.Even without any prominent journalist on its pay roll,it managed to corner such a large readership because it concentrated upon the requirements and taste of its readers.

The politics is discussed at Chouck even now but it is mostly Panchayat Politics.Panchayat has suddenly become the nerve centre of rural India.Money are pouring in and there are various works related to one scheme or other being carried out. This development has made tectonic shift in attitude of the people.Like Participatory Journalism, they are happy to be the part of Participatory Politics now. They feel empowered and are enjoying that too.
