A Political Mind - December 2007

Narendra Modi Retains The Chair !

December 25th 2007 23:40
It is jokingly talked that when some Japanese propsed Lalu Prashad Yadav to hand them over the Buddhist circuit to restore the roads and other related infrastructure so that the tourist could have less harrowing time traversing the region. They proposed that they would complete the task in an year only.Lalu is said to have reported that he could convert the whole of Japan and make that country similar to Bihar in less than one month!
Japanese never came back to Lalu again but Lalu's prophesies has come true in the case of Congress.Congress started aping his brand of politics intoto and many leaders anxious to be noticed by the madam, resorted to big mouth politics ignoring the real and hard political facts at the ground level.

The victory of Narendra Modi was a foregone conclusion as no Indian would like to be constantly humiliated in spite of bearnig the burnt of continued terrorism for many years in the name of secularism.Indians by and large are very liberal and Hindu never wear religion on their sleeves. But when in the name of secularism their feelings are hurt they are bound to react.Congress failed to recognise this and accepted the CPM Prescribed brand of secularism, which is not relevant for a country like India and yet again lost the state which had almost come to its lap.Had the congress been equally sensitive to the feelings of all religious communities then the situation would not have been such bad for the secular parties.
Even after the resounding defeat the congress politicians were not willing to accept that gracefully. Many leaders participating in studio discussion still behaved arrogantly and they seem unlikely to mend their ways unless they are completely out of the horizon.
NDTV put all its resources and various anchors were making almost insulting remarks to Narendra modi in particular and BJP in general. The Pakistan fixation of NDTV is very conspicuous for many years but the way it has jeered and derided everything Indian and Hindu is very disturbing. They must understand that Indian society is not exactly similar to the w-block resident welfare society of Greater Kailash,New Delhi.Religion is beyond logical scrutiny for hundreds of millions of ordinary Indians living across the length and breadth of this country. They can not accept constant preaching from some corporate entity whose sole aim is to squeeze profit somehow. They are concerned about their moolah only and for that they don't mind being unethical also. They exhort viewers to send SM S's after all and sundry junk they broadcast and garner as much SMS as they can without ever clarifying the viewers about the cost of such SM S's.

This is bizarre because this very channel is submissive to Lalu and hostile to Nitish Kumar.Thousands of people are enraged abbot this and there has been very serious discussion about how to tackle this menace which is against development and everything Indian.Hopefully good sense will prevail and they will come down from their hallowed pedestal and start looking things afresh from Indian Perspective.

A NEW WORLD ENVIRONMENT ORDER

December 20th 2007 09:22
India has once again proved that it can protect its own and developing countries’ interest at international fora. It all happened at the Indonesian holiday resort, Bali, where about 190 countries from across the globe entered into a roadmap to take action to reduce greenhouse emissions in the atmosphere forcing climate change. In this UN conference on climate change India achieved a tough deal. It forcefully argued and defended against imposition of binding targets on developing countries and made the rich, industrialised nations to provide fund and support transfer of clean technology to poor and developing countries. Timely initiative by India at the fort-night long meet ensured that the developed countries cannot simply put the onus on the poor nations. Accordingly a decision was taken at the extended session where leaders have decided to adhere to new set of principles, that will, over the next two years, help the countries decide a post 2012 deal. By next two years, the deal will be drawn making it clear what is expected from each country.

Under the United Nations Treaty called the UN framework on climate change, there is an existing deal called the Kyoto Protocol. It demands that the 36 big emitters, mostly industrialised nations, reduce their emissions by a fixed percentage by 2012. Bali conference was to discuss what happens after 2012. The Kyoto protocol expires in 2012. At present only the rich nations, responsible for more than 70 percent of emissions, are expected to cut carbon emissions. But they demanded that after 2012, even the developing countries also start some kind of emission cuts. This means a complete u- turn of the existing treaty. India and other similarly placed countries contend that such a step will pose a hurdle for economic growth. India argued that the rich countries who are the worst polluters should take responsibility. This argument has been taken care of and a roadmap for the future course of action finalised.

An Indian delegate at the end of the conference said, “fourteen days of negotiations, running deep into mid-night on several occasions, finally brought us to the showdown. So, the rich nations should support a fund and clean technologies to make the not so rich to cut emissions. This will help these countries not to sacrifice their economic growth which is vital”. The Science and Technology Minister Shri Kapil Sibal said, “it was a hard fought win, but we have secured India’s position in the two year negotiations that delegates have agreed at Bali and which will be completed by 2009”.

Explaining the 90 minute high drama on the last day of the meeting, an Indian official said that a critical resolution demanding that the rich work on transferring clean technologies and fund such mechanisms for the sake of developing world was left out at the discussions and instead an American resolution demanding commitments from the developing world got floated. At this point India intervened to put forth its position and the European Union supported it besides the developing nations. Finally it was agreed that such countries would undertake climate change mitigation along with rich nations passing on technologies and funding that would help them to pursue economic growth and also cut emissions.

Environmentalist who heads the Nobel Prize winning inter governmental panel on climate change, Mr.R.K.Pachauri said, “the future is going to be a low-carbon society and those who accept the fact are going to be the winners and those who don’t will be left behind. The Indian industry will be the vanguard of this change. There is a need to bring about a technology revolution in India in the sectors like transport, power and building. India needs to make judicious use of water, electricity and build more rural infrastructure”.

China and the entire G-77 and the EU have supported India’s brought amendment at the Bali conference of the UN framework convention on climate change. All nations have agreed on an action plan on a war-footing for combating climate change. The UNFCCC has agreed to help protect forests through special funding, as part of Bali roadmap. India on its part has taken steps where-ever possible and which are within its reach. If all countries follow such actions a successful climate framework will be just two years away. Cooperation and coordination are needed at this hour to face the alarming consequences of climate change. These should come from both the rich and the not so rich nations world-wide. Any backing out of the consensus reached at the Bali conference will only put the entire world into a boiling point.

Gujrat election is over and as per poll pundits,Narendra Modi will retain his office. There was so much focus on Gujrat that the election of Himachal Pradesh went largely unnoticed. The Gujrat obsession has done a world of good for Modi.It has elevated his status so much that the BJP leadership thought it prudent to announce L.K.Advani as its Prime Ministerial candidates amidst the election. The growing mass appeal of Modi transcending Gujrat borders might have forced BJP central leadership to act in haste so that Modi is confined largely to Gujrat Politics.

Rajnath Singh, the present BJP president is not in good terms with Modi and Arun Jaitly, who were not included in the apex parliamentary body of the party sometimes ago.Jaitly ,the suave and articulate ,was divested from his responsibility of party spokes person also.It was a bizarre decision as the party is always held in suspicion and Jaitly had been defending party moves very successfully for years. After the victory the Modi-Jaitly combination will certainly try to redeem some space they have lost.Besides,Rajnath Singh is considered a Pramod Mahajan Protegee who in the absence of his mentor would find it hard to hold of his own.

BJP would claim that by declaring its prime ministerial candidate it tried to give the message to the voters that a parson from Gujrat is trying to occupy the highest executive post at the centre also. So, ensure that Modi return to the power and strengthen the hand of Advani.

Modi might have inflame-ted communal hatred and riots but that is yet to be proved in the court .If found guilty he will be punished as per the law of the land. But the double speak of the secular parties who are desperate to show their secular credentials only to garner a certain section of votes did not go well with the masses.Had the Congress and other secular parties shown equal concern for those who were burnt alive and visited the affected families too then the message would have been delivered clearly. But here the impression was that all these parties were shying away from even mentioning the plight of these families.

To make matter worst the congress led government started showering the award and accolades to the activists like Teesta Svetalvad, who had been so vocal that angered even the most liberal Gujrati people. Those people who switched their loyalty from the BJP and joined the Congress were given tickets also and this was something which did not go well with the average people. The congress was also unable to portray its vision of prosperous Gujrat that the average citizen is craving for now.

Congress need to change with time otherwise all these years of carefully crafted policy and planning to hand over the crown to Rahul Gandhi will go haywire. The best way is to showcase the achievement of its ruling state. In absence of any major achievement to sell, the general people would go for the party which would promise to deliver.Leaders like Digvijay Singh will never stop politicking congress style and the party would be shrunked further and further. The best way forward would be to unleash the young Turks and the people will respond favourably.

There is an under current flowing across the country and that is the yearning for development. Those seem following aggressive developmental zeal would attract the voters. The impression by and large now is that the economy is on auto pilot and had this government not succumbed to the Left's threat and pursued economic reform than the result would have been far better. Will it now pursue developmental politics or keep politicking traditional ways is the moot question now.Hopefully the congress will introspect and effect the course correction. The country needs stronger congress otherwise all those parties would come to power which have no other policies than spreading the caste hatred in the name of social or equitable justice.

Citizen Activism Will Fill The Void Of Judicial Activism !

Political leaders cutting across party lines have welcomed the observation of Supreme Court Of India about the so called “Judicial Activism”.This will be an ideal scenario for our leaders as they would fear none now and would be free to behave and act in anarchic and chaotic ways. Now onwards money and muscle power would rule the roost;bureaucrats would amass obscene amounts of wealth;environment rules would be dumped;illegal colonies would sprout everywhere;human rights would be violated and our leaders would keep patronizing these activities shamelessly

When the Left Parties threatened to withdraw their support, the constituent parties forming the United Progressive Alliance developed cold feet and after a marathon meeting, they decided to save the government at the cost of the Nuclear deal.Leaders of regional parties saw no merit in sacrificing the privileged opportunity for something that their electorate would not understand and appreciate. After some hectic lobbying left relented and allowed the government to take a step further for the time being. As a result, frantic negotiations are now being carried out with the International Atomic Energy Corporation at Vienna and the safeguard measures would be in place very shortly, hopefully.

Political parties, especially regional parties gain power by exploiting the emotive issues that have direct bearings on the day to day lives of the multitudes, but once they come into power, they start politicking. They perforn mere lip service and divert their attention from the core issues

Will Narendra Modi Regain The Power?

December 8th 2007 10:25
The outcome of the election result of Gujrat is eagerly awaited because there seem to be no clear winner as yet.The BJP government is in power there for more than a decade now so the anti incumbency factors will certainly play its part.Only west Bengal government and to some extent the Rashtriya Janta Dal government, led by Lalu Prashad Yadav were able to to check anti-incumbancy to some extent in the recent past.
BJP is relying heavily upon the charistma of its chief minister, the very controversial Narendra Modi .Opposition too is aware of the clout of Modi and hope to wean away secular voters from the BJP camp this time. The secular minorities are already behind it absolutely and now it has welcomed all those who deserted Modi into its fold. Those who have joined the congress will be now secular.Majorty of the Hindu voters, however, remain fundamentalists as they are likely to vote for BJP-Modi.If some of them break away and bcome secular by voting against Modi then there is a reasonable possibility that congress might regain the power once again.
Modi was boasting his developmental work this time but the ghost of Godhra has not left him so no credit was awarded to him for that.Local Media and Nationa Media is at opposite ends at this issue.Where as national media is stuck at 2002 the local media consider that just a horrible phase that have passed and died down now.The popularity of Modi is amaging among the {fundamentalists}Hidues. This is recognized by the Congress too and they have put their all might to dislodge him this time.Sonia Gandhi,Digvijaya Singh,Mamohan Singh and all the secularists like Teesta Sevtavad,Javed Akhtar and others who have been awarded by this government, are leaving no stone unturned to dislodge Modi this time

Mockery Of Secularism And Tolerance !

December 2nd 2007 09:49
Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen has withdrawn controversial lines in her autobiographical book Dwikhandito. Earlier the government of India had said that she could live in this country but she had to refrain from hurting religious sentiments. The author has declared ''I am withdrawing the controversial lines from my book Dwikhandito. The book was written in 2002 based on my memories of Bangladesh in the 1980s during which time secularism was removed from the Bangladesh constitution.'' ''Because I value secularism I wanted secularism to remain in the Bangladesh constitution. I didn't write the book to hurt anybody's sentiments. Some people claim that sentiments have been hurt. It was not intended. I hope there will be no controversy anymore and I will be able to live peacefully in India,'' she said.
After having taken refuge in Europe and the United States, taslima now lives in Kolkata. Nasreen holds a European Union passport issued by Sweden.Taslima Nasreen fled Bangladesh for the first time in 1994, when a court said she had “deliberately and maliciously” hurt Muslims’ religious feelings with her Bengali-language novel “Lajja”, or “Shame”, which is about Hindu-Muslim riots. At the time, thousands of radical Muslims protested against her, demanding that she be killed for blasphemy, and some have continued to threaten her life. The author describes herself as a “secular humanist”, and criticises the use of religion as an oppressive force. She worked as a doctor before turning to writing. But several of her books have been banned in Bangladesh and India, which also has a large Bengali-speaking population, because they upset hardliner Muslims. She was awarded the Sakharov Prize for freedom of thought in 1994 by the European Parliament.
