A Political Mind - November 2007

Financial health of the country affects all of usometimes directly ;sometimes indirectly. Those who have invested in equities or mutual funds are rewarded significantly when the stock market is on the roll and the very same investors bear the brunt when the market becomes bearish. All parameters suggest that India's growth momentum will be intact for the coming several years and that will manifest itself through the booming stock market.

American Treasury Department in the meantime reduced the interest rate by half-point and indicated that under no circumstances the liquidity in the market would be allowed to dry up.Welcoming the measures, major stock exchanges of Europe bounced back significantly.Asian market also bounced back.

These economic nitty-gritties are understood best by educated investors but hundreds and thousands of small investors living across the big and small towns, and in some cases villages also, are invariably caught into the complex web of bulls and bears. Most of them are badly hit and run away, never to return again.Although,no one can time the market but this class of people make horrible decisions of entering the market at its peak and exit as soon as it starts going down.Their exposure to Mutual Fund is almost negligible and they mostly follow the advise of the Trading Terminal Owner. There are also many self-styled stock guru's who have popped up everywhere and advise "best pick" to their clients after charging their fee. These experts mostly advise their clients to buy stocks which are obscure but jump up or down crazily. In the bull run one keeps doubling the investment every week but the moment market becomes bearish, those very stocks become illiquid and the investor is stuck with that. That's why timing to exit the market is as important as timing to enter it.Disciplined approach is the most important and how through that approach ordinary rural folks of Gujrat have been minting money is a topic of case study for investing lessons.

Almost every village of any sizable population in Gujrat state of India has a trading terminal, mostly connected to the National Stock Exchange.Villagers are not highly literate but due to their disciplined investment approach, most of them has grown rich. This phenomena has failed to spread other states.Trading terminals have reached every nook and corner of India but the disciplined investing approach have not spread elsewhere.

The perception about investment in Stock Market is still very negative among lower-middle class. Many consider this akin to gambling and surprisingly, many well- read person also subscribe to this view. Thus the thousands of crores made on stock exchanges are not distributed far and wide.A very small percentage of people are getting benefited from it and becoming obscenely rich. They in turn invest some part of that money into reality sector ,propelling that to stratosphere.

Everybody agrees that Indian Economy is on growth curve and that will be reflected through the Stock Market.Sceptics will miss the bus for being perennial sceptics and the market will be touching newer heights again and again. This is time to reap the benefits.Don't remain prejudiced.A sound investment in the market might bring more than expected return.Be positive and start investing steadily and slowly....

The Roar Of Ram Vilash Paswan ?

November 29th 2007 12:12
After remaining in oblivion for more than two years,Ram Vilas Paswan organized a massive rally in the sprawling Gandhi Maidan in Patna on Wednesday. The huge turnout in the "Sankalp Rally," has certainly brought him and his party in the forefront yet again. Reinvigorated Paswan has now openly declared that he will not have any tie-up with the RJD of Lalu Prasad Yadav and it is up to Congress to decide with whom it intends to align in the forthcoming elections.

It is not a secret that Paswan was hurt when he was threatened to be ejected from the cabinet unless he became a part of the United Progressive Alliance in Bihar as well and support Rabri Devi' so that she could claim to form the government. The threat delivered by Sitaram Yechury of the CPI(M) did not yield any result but it certainly highlighted Paswan's lust for power.

Paswan was earlier denied the Railway Ministry that resulted in an abrupt end of the bonhomie between him and Lalu.Humiliated and belittled,Paswan has been aloof all these months, cutting a very sorry figure.Paswan, like the late Jagjiwan Ram always managed to anticipate the political turnaround and secure an important portfolio for himself in the new dispensation. But the arrival of Lalu at the centre and the compulsion of Congress to keep Lalu in good humor resulted in the marginalization of Paswan. The way Lalu leveraged Railway's resources to keep his party afloat must have thickened the bad blood between them.Paswan was miffed because he felt cheated by Lalu as they had fought parliamentary election together and won majority of seats.Lalu was given more weightage at the centre because he had greater number of parliamentarians.Paswan did not fight assembly election together and both suffered as the votes split between them. Now the table seems to have been turned and Lalu again finds himself on sticky wicket.Ignoring overturers , Paswan has resolved to go alone in order to put RJD on the mat.

Before Nitish Kumar, the people of Bihar had reposed faith in Paswan for his audacious move of taking the RJD head-on.He launched his Lok Janshakti Party and gave tickets to dreaded criminals who had not been poached by other parties till then. Many of them were sworn adversaries of RJD.

The Muslim-Yadav alliance of Lalu Yadav seemed impregnable which was further strengthened by the support of other backward and dalit castes. There was Jungle Raj all around.Universities and Colleges were deserted as the teachers had lost interest in teaching. They had not been paid for years.Bureaucrats had virtually stopped performing their duty as they were constantly humiliated by political goons.Almost everybody was trying to get himself transferred to Jharkhand or some deputation outside the state. There was unprecedented migration from the state.

Amidst such gloomy scenario,Paswan challenged Lalu in his own coin and almost emerged victorious. But greed overpowered him and the fear of leaving the cabinet prevented him from forming an alliance with Nitish Kumar.Unlike Mayawati he had secured most of the Upper Caste votes without any effort to woo them. But his indecisiveness cost him dearly and the whole chunk shifted towards JDU-BJP combine.

After loosing out in Bihar,Paswan lost influence in Delhi too.Whereas Lalu hogged all the limelight he cut a sorry and lonely figure. Now, realizing the importance of setting his house in order, he has become active again and this 'Sankalp Rally' is the beginning of the journey.

Malaysia’s Indian community staged its biggest anti-government protest on Sunday when more than 10,000 protesters defied tear gas and water cannons to fight racial discrimination. “Malaysian Indians have never gathered in such large numbers in this way.” said organiser P Uthaya Kumar, of the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf). “They are frustrated and have no job opportunities in the government or the private sector. They are not given business licences or places in university,” he said, adding that Indians were also incensed by some recent demolitions of Hindu temples.
The demonstrators, an alliance of opposition parties and civil society groups, chanted "Election Reform" and "Justice". "The Malaysian public must be allowed to express their opinions and views," parliamentary opposition leader Lim Kit Siang said at the palace gates before delivering a petition to the king. New York-based Human Rights Watch slammed the government's stance on the mass rally, which Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi had vowed to suppress and police had threatened to arrest protesters. Human Rights Watch said Malaysian elections have been sullied by vote-buying, the use of public resources by the ruling parties and accusations of bias against the Election Commission.
Anwar, who was heir apparent to former premier Mahathir Mohamad until 1998 when he was sacked and jailed for sodomy and corruption gave the slogan of "Reformasi" or "Reform" and declared that "we want free and fair elections. Anwar's sodomy conviction has been overturned but the corruption verdict stands, barring him from standing for public office until April 2008. Elections are widely expected to be held early next year.Protests are rare in Malaysia, and the last major rallies were seen in 1998 during the "Reformasi" movement that erupted after Anwar's sacking. The mainstream political parties, meanwhile, have disassociated themselves from the rally, saying that the illegal gathering is an opposition ploy to smear the government's image ahead of the country's general elections. The Malaysian government has warned that it will not hesitate to invoke the country's strict security laws that allow detentions without trial on those involved.

Three members of a Hindu forum, charged with sedition earlier in November, were ordered to be freed on technical grounds by a judge on Monday. The three were arrested on Friday and charged under the Sedition Act for their speech on November 16.Sedition is punishable by three years in prison and a fine in Malaysia. The activists wanted to hand over a memorandum signed by thousands of ethnic Indians demanding Queen Elizabeth II to appoint her counsel to represent them in a class action suit against the British government for bringing Indians to the then Malaya as 'indentured labourers"' and exploiting them. The suit claimed that the community was facing discrimination and marginalisation to this day, an allegation denied by the Malaysian government.'The suit sought a declaration that the Reid Commission Report 1957 failed to incorporate the rights of the Indian community when independence was granted, resulting in discrimination and marginalisation to this day.'Ethnic Indians make up eight per cent of the population. There has been inequality in job opportunities and education and in many other areas and this protest gain significance as a large number of youths and women turned up to demand change.

For the government, Indo-US Nuclear deal is not a mere political issue but a new strategic alliance India is trying to carve out.It has been the tradition in India that there is unanimity in position as far as the Foreign policy and strategic affairs are concerned, but this time, Left Parties who are supporting the government played the spoilsport. The vehement opposition of the Left , going to the extent of threatening to pull the support being extended to the government will render this government in minority. The main opposition party,BJP,the Bhartiya Janta Party, always eager to derive benefits from the squabbling within the ruling alliance, has said that it will bring 'no confidence motion' in the Parliament against the government .Political parties are accusing the government of compromising with the country's sovereignty in the Nuclear field.Political leaders feel that the bilateral agreement covering the US-India Civil Nuclear Deal ,also known as 123 agreement will end India’s sovereignty . Prime Minister on the other hand has assured the Parliament that the nuclear deal would not affect India’s strategic interests, its advanced R & D programmes or its three-phase civil nuclear energy programme. Talking on the issue of nuclear testing, Manmohan Singh said,“There is nothing in the agreement that would tie the hands of a future Government,” .Dr.Singh clarified many issues related to the nuclear deal such as the concept of full civilian nuclear cooperation, the principle of reciprocity, certification, IAEA safeguards, fuel supply assurances, integrity and reliability of strategic programmes, autonomy of decision making and future scientific research and development, cessation of cooperation etc.Manmohan Singh said,“Sir, let me end by saying that we have achieved an agreement that is good for India, and good for the world. I am neither given to exaggeration nor am I known to be self-congratulatory. I will let history judge; I will let posterity judge the value of what we have done through this agreement. When future generations look back, they will come to acknowledge the significance of this historic deal

The Chief Minister of Bihar,Nitish Kumar celebrated two years of his government which has made "big mouth" politicians like Raghuvansh Prasad Singh nervous and worried.Mr.Singh says that the chief Minister spurns central funds and has let rural development projects suffer.According to him, Bihar could benefit from a financial assistance from his Ministry of Rural Development, but the state government does not seem interested.“I write four letters to him (Nitish) every month. He does not even bother to write back. All we get from him in terms of response are official receipts. This is shocking,” Raghuvansh Prasad says.

Raghuvansh P.Singh is only playing politics, as he always does, at the cost of the well being of the state he also belongs to.His party (RJD) ruled the state for more than fifteen years, destroying all the social, economic, educational and agricultural infrastructure. He was very much part and parcel of the Destruction Brigade. Now when the state government has done a tremendous job which is being appreciated too, these leaders are trying to put obstructions for their own sake. They know that people have realised the importance of good governance and that a non-performer stands no chance in the upcoming elections. So, like his mentor Lalu P.Yadav ,he has started misusing his ministry to put the state government in bad light.Lalu is misusing the resources of railways for politicking and he is twisting facts and figures for his own purpose

THE COMMONWEALTH on Thursday suspended Pakistan from the organisation until the return of democracy and the rule of law. The Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group decided to suspend Pakistan from the 53-nation bloc pending the return of the rule of law following the imposition of Emergency rule earlier this month.
Pervez Musharraf is a democrat, a visionary, and a loyal ally in the war on terror for the president George Bush but to an ever-widening phalanx of critics, he is a ’’thug, ’’ a ‘ power hungry dictator’’ and now, a ’’terrorist.’’ A California daily has referred to him as a ’’terrorist,’’ attributing the epithet to critics. Many analysts have been pointing his dark side of siding with extremists and fundamentalists at the expense of moderate forces, even as the administration certifies his indispensability in the war on terror. While US’ penchant for backing despots, have been criticized in the past, seldom has the language descended to this level. In fact, there are almost no takers now for the Bush policy of backing Pakistan’s military ruler. Even those believing that Pakistan’s military is a stabilising force are now concluding that Musharraf has outlived his promises and utility.

Bollywood Effect !

November 23rd 2007 07:06
Bollywood films are politically correct, still they are censored and subjected to certification. It's fine if the Government wants the movies made within the set parameters, adhering to the broad societal norms.Bollywood too has no complaint as the type of movies churned out are mostly Dance-Drama-Fantasy and seldom digress from the beaten path.Only at the time of the announcement of National Awards we hear some noise, mostly from the left-leaning-intellectual-low budget-film makers. The point is neither Masala nor serious films leave any impression on the average Urban Indian.

Innumerable films have shown honest, upright police officers.Though they show the inspector living in a sea facing bungalow, visiting five star clubs, driving swankiest of cars, having affairs with the prettiest of girls yet,he is so honest that he prefers to break instead of bow ,even when offered tons of money. But,alas! These virtues have remained confined to the realm of movies only
