A Political Mind - April 2007

Although the US constitution says that all citizens are equal regardless of age, sex, religion or political belief, homosexuals or gay people are not treated equally. This may be because of religious beliefs or social pressure. In light of this, if someone comes up to me asks "Is America Ready for a Gay President", I would have to say, with sadness, NO.

Why? America is not ready for a gay president because the society still has deep seated bias against gay people. It may not be intentional in some cases but because of years and years of prejudice the discrimination and negative attitude is still there. Some people justify the discrimination on basis of their religious belief.MORE

Al Sharpton: Bigot or hypocrite

April 19th 2007 16:28
Al Sharpton, who descends to every town in America if you dare say anything against the African American community, is in my opinion a hypocrite.

Sharpton who was once a civil rights leader has now transformed himself into an one man army. He will hunt you down if you cross the line against African American people. On the onset, this looks like a man who is dedicated and someone who is willing to work for his community. You are mistaken my friend if you have these ideas about Mr. Sharpton.

True. Sharpton has contributed to the civil rights movement. But what about the vast gap between the African American community and the rest of America in terms of education, jobs and economic strength? What has he done about it. Nothing. What about African American women who are constantly denigrated in rap and hip-hop music and by rappers? Nothing. And yes what about the large number of African American men in prisons in America, what had he done for them? Nothing.

You see, Sharpton goes about look of issues that are "hot" and those that will get him media attention. That is why he was so active on the Duke case and now the Imus case. Ask him about economic empowerment of African Americans, he will run away in opposite direction. Why? because that issue will get him the media time.
Ask him to take up the issue of education in his community, he will not help out.Because that is not a "hot"issue. MORE

The bling bling trend, which is common term for the rising love of jewelery among the masses, is sort of a cultural and economic phenomena.

Rise in the bling bling trend came with the help of rappers, sports icons and also the music stars. Just look at Snoop Dogg, P.Diddy or any other rapper, they are "loaded" with all the bling bling, from diamond rings, earrings to bracelet and chains. That huge diamond encrusted plate Snoop Dogg wears with his name on is probably the biggest bling bling around. Even among sports stars bling bling trend is rising. LeBron James, the basketball star is seen wearing diamond ear piece and many others are doing the same.

While it may seem that only men are after this trend, watch out. Women are not far behind. Look at Oprah, she wears that sparking diamond earrings and necklace, Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez, Maria Carey, all have the big bling bling love.

Undoubtedly, people want to copy the stars, so they are following the bling bling trend. But for how long?MORE

Ah! the questions about morality on the internet! The world of cyberspace has encroached our lives so much that we are now losing breath talking about morality on the internet and the challenges facing it.

Morality on the internet, if you ask me, is an none issue. It is not that internet makes it difficult for people to keep their morals. No. Internet just makes it easy and convenient for people to experiment with their morals. You can take advantage of the anonymity internet offers and lose track of your morals but it is you who is in charge, not the internet. You chose to do something on the internet, so to blame the internet is wrong

I don't know who don Imus is, I mean what kind of person he is or what his beliefs are. This means I have no right to judge whether he is a racist or not. By just listening to statements he made in regard to the Rutgers Women's basketball players, I would have to say he has some serious misconceptions and being a woman it did offend me, but I will refrain from calling him an out right racist.

Now in this light, if you ask me if he should be fired or not, I would say NO. This because, he has First Amendment Right to free speech. Well, free speech does not mean he can say whatever nonsense about women and minorities but we cannot force him to be nice. All we can do is call him out on his mistake and show what he has done. After that it is him who has to decide, whether he wants to change his ways or not. MORE

Means of social control

April 8th 2007 17:13
Since the beginning of civilization, man and society has tried to have some form of social control.

In the beginning social control was meant to keep peace and have an environment where people can search for food and water without being worried about violence. As the human society developed, means of social control have evolved to embrace the changes

the poll by BBC shows that anti-American sentiment is growing around the world. it did not surprise me and i think this trend will grow to be a larger movement in years to come. this because:

# USA is increasingly acting as a hostile nation willing to attack any country which does not confirm to its views and is seemed to be working against the American interest. case and point iraq. we all know that the weapons of mass destruction and the ore war intelligence reports were all sham. but the country is still in war with iraq. people see this and form a negative view of america

Islamic feminism

April 5th 2007 16:09
With all the negative publicity surrounding Islam and its treatment of women, some people people will find it difficult to believe that there is growing feminist movement within the Islamic world and also that the Holy Koran has many verses where the Prophet has said that women should be treated with respect and dignity.

Let me begin with the Holy Koran. There are verses where it is sad that women have right to their husband's property after his death, that a woman should be asked before she is given off in marriage for her consent and also that proper treatment of wife, daughter is a major responsibility of a father. Before Islam's arrival in Saudi Arabia, some tribes there practices female infanticide because daughters were considered to be a burden. The Prophet strongly condemned these practices and said that daughters should be raise with love and care

Well, many are complaining that the elections campaign has started too soon. They may have a point, with all the campaign rhetoric and candidate from both sides trying their best to sound the perfect candidate, the political scene looks like one big drama.

Focusing on Democratic hopefuls, I am especially concerned about the public persona of Hillary Clinton. If anyone of you have noticed her during her campaign talks at New Hampshire recently, you know what I mean. She is trying too hard to be the "perfect" candidate. She wants to project herself as the very best in every issues, from social security to Iraq war. Clinton is staying away from controversial issues so as to avoid ruffing feathers of certain groups. In one word, she looks like a Stepford Candidate, all to mechanical...MORE
